Who qualifies for the scheme
The scheme is open to nationals of countries outside the European Union and the European Economic Area who can perform their work regardless of location using telecommunications technology, and who work for an employer registered abroad or carry out work for companies and clients based outside the country.
There are three requirements for the applicant, set out as a closed list: they must be able to carry out their work remotely using telecommunications technology; they must either be employed by a company registered abroad for which they can work regardless of location, or be self-employed and providing services remotely to clients based abroad; and they must be able to demonstrate a stable and sufficient monthly net income of €3,500 — after deducting contributions and taxes.
Note the word ’net.’ The threshold is calculated not from turnover or the contract amount, but from what remains after contributions and taxes. This is the first point where applications fall short: income is formally above the threshold, but net income is below it.
- Citizens of countries outside the EU and EEA
- Work is performed remotely via telecommunications technology
- Employer or clients — outside Cyprus
- Net income €3,500 per month, after contributions and taxes
What the status gives you
The right of residence in Cyprus for one year, with the option to extend for a further two years. The maximum horizon of the scheme is therefore three years.
The right of residence for family members is granted for the same period as the digital nomad’s own permit — but without the right to be employed or carry out economic activity in Cyprus. This limitation is worth discussing as a family before relocating: the second adult arrives as an accompanying dependent, not as a worker.
And the tax consequence written into the scheme itself: if a person is present in the Republic for one or more periods totalling more than 183 days in a single tax year, they are considered a Cyprus tax resident — provided they are not a tax resident of any other country.
The final caveat is important and often gets lost in retelling: the 183-day rule does not apply automatically — it only takes effect if the person has no tax residency in another country. What happens to one’s status in the country of departure is governed by that country’s laws and by any treaty between the two countries. That is a separate matter and is not resolved simply by obtaining a Cypriot permit.
| Nomad | Family members | |
|---|---|---|
| First permit duration | 1 year | the same period |
| Renewal | up to 2 more years | the same period |
| Right to work in Cyprus | work exclusively for clients abroad | no |
| Economic activity in Cyprus | no | no |
Procedure and timelines
The first step is entering the Republic — by tourist visa if needed. Those already legally residing in Cyprus under another status may apply for digital-nomad status without leaving.
The second step is filing. Within three months of arrival, the application with a complete set of documents must be submitted to the department’s central office in Nicosia. All supporting documents must be officially translated and properly certified. Applications without a complete set of documents are not accepted for review at all — this is stated explicitly.
You may apply in person or through an authorized representative. Any change in the applicant’s details during the review process must be reported to the department immediately.
To issue the permit, biometric data is collected — photograph, fingerprints and signature; for children under six, photograph only. Biometrics can be submitted at the same time as the application or later, in Nicosia or at the local migration police unit in your area of residence. Biometrics are taken again at renewal.
Processing time is five to seven weeks. Fees: issuing or renewing a permit — €70; initial registration in the foreigners register — an additional €70.
The extension application must be submitted no later than one month before the permit expires.
| Stage | Duration or amount |
|---|---|
| Filing after entry | within 3 months |
| Review | 5–7 weeks |
| Renewal application | no later than 1 month before expiry |
| Issue or renewal of the permit | 70 euros |
| Initial registration in the foreigners’ register | 70 euros |
About the scheme’s ceiling
The scheme has a cap on the number of permits issued: the document that established it set a ceiling, which has since been raised. We deliberately do not print the current figure here — it has changed before, and any number we publish will be outdated before a reader gets to the application stage.
Even so, it is worth knowing about the quota, because it changes the logic of planning. When the quota is closed, an application may be blocked not by the quality of the documents or the level of income, but by an exhausted limit — and that is the one ground for refusal that an applicant cannot influence in any way.
The practical takeaway is simple: once you have chosen your route, apply sooner rather than waiting until you feel ready, and keep a backup ground in mind.

Frequently asked questions
What income is required for a Cyprus digital nomad visa?
A stable and sufficient net monthly income of 3,500 euros — after deductions and taxes. The threshold is based on what remains, not on turnover or the amount stated in a contract.
How long is the status granted for?
The initial permit is valid for one year, with the option to renew for a further two. The maximum horizon under this scheme is three years.
Can a spouse work in Cyprus?
No. Family members receive the right to reside for the same period as the digital nomad, but without the right to be employed or engage in any economic activity in Cyprus.
When should you submit the application?
Within three months of arrival, at the central office of the department in Nicosia. Applications submitted without a complete set of documents are not accepted for review, so translations and certifications should be prepared in advance.
How long does a decision take?
Five to seven weeks. Fees — €70 for issuing or renewing the permit, plus another €70 for initial registration in the foreigners register.
Will I become a tax resident of Cyprus?
The scheme itself states: a person who spends more than 183 days in total in the Republic during a single tax year is considered a Cyprus tax resident — provided they are not a tax resident of any other country. What happens to their status in their previous country is determined by that country’s laws.
