How it is submitted
To obtain or extend a visitor permit, an application of the prescribed form is submitted along with the required supporting documents. All documents submitted as part of the application must be officially translated and duly certified.
When submitting the application, if there has been no previous registration, the applicant is registered for the first time in the foreigners’ register and issued a foreigners’ registration card.
To issue the permit, biometric data is collected — photograph, fingerprints and signature; for children under six, photograph only. The same data is collected at renewal.
Applicants are notified of approval by letter stating how to collect the permit. A refusal also comes in writing — with reasons stated. This is worth noting: unlike many jurisdictions, the reasons for a refusal are communicated here.
- A prescribed-form application with a complete set of
- Official translation and certification of all documents
- Initial registration in the foreigners’ register and foreigner’s identity card
- Biometrics at issuance and at renewal
- Reasons are provided in the event of a refusal
Timelines and fees
Processing time is usually up to four months, provided the information and documents submitted are sufficient. That caveat carries real weight: an incomplete set turns four months into an open-ended wait.
The fees are straightforward: issuing or renewing a permit costs €70; initial registration in the foreigners’ register is an additional €70, and only applies on first registration.
The duration of the first permit is one year. An exception is made for clergy, monks, and nuns of the Orthodox Church and churches of other religious minorities in Cyprus: their permit is extended to three years upon a corresponding request from the church and submission of the required documents.
Permits are renewed when the relevant criteria are met.
| What | Value |
|---|---|
| Initial permit | 1 year |
| Review | usually up to 4 months |
| Issue or renewal | 70 euros |
| Initial registration in the foreigners’ register | 70 euros |
| Entry permit for marriage to a Cypriot citizen | 3 months |
The passport determines the length of status
This rule is written in a single line and costs more than it appears: if the passport expires first, the residence permit is issued with a validity ending three months before the applicant’s passport expiry date.
In other words, someone arriving with a passport valid for ten more months will receive not a full year but around seven months — and will then need to renew again, with biometrics again, and fees again.
The same rule applies to family members: spouses, children, and, where applicable, direct ascendants residing on a visitor permit are issued a permit within the validity period of the primary person’s permit — provided the foreign national’s travel document is valid under the same conditions.
The practical takeaway: renew your passport before applying, not after. It is the cheapest optimisation in the entire process.
A specific case: a permit for marriage
The department spells out the exception explicitly: residence permits issued to visitors for the purpose of marrying a Cypriot citizen are valid for three months only — just long enough for the marriage to take place.
This is not a residence permit based on marriage, nor a route to spousal status: it is a narrow window for one specific action. Everything that follows the wedding is processed separately and under different rules.
You cannot plan to use this permit as a year of living in the country — it was not designed for that.

Frequently asked questions
How long is a Cyprus visitor residence permit granted for?
The initial permit is valid for one year. An exception is made for clergy and monastics of the Orthodox Church and churches of other religious minorities: their term may be extended to three years at the church’s request.
Does a visitor permit allow you to work?
No. This is a residence permit, not a work permit: employment in Cyprus is arranged under separate grounds with their own procedures.
How long does a decision take?
Usually within four months of submission, provided the information and documents submitted are sufficient.
How much do the fees cost?
Issue or renewal of a permit — 70 euros. Initial registration in the foreigners register — an additional 70 euros, charged only at the time of first registration.
Is it true that a passport’s expiry date affects the length of a permit?
Yes. If the passport expires sooner, the permit is issued with a validity date three months before the passport expiry. For this reason, the passport should be renewed before submitting the application, not after.
What is the three-month permit for marriage purposes?
Permits issued to visitors for the purpose of marrying a Cypriot citizen are valid for three months only — for the ceremony itself. Status following the wedding is obtained through a separate application on a different ground.
